Create Compelling Architectural Design Proposals

Crafting a persuasive design proposal gives you the edge of winning a project. In this blog, we will talk about

How to Create a Compelling Architectural Design Proposals?

The successful proposal combines strong graphics, storytelling, and a focus on the client's needs. Architects think and analyze their design proposals in many different ways. Here are some of the tips to help you to create a compelling design proposal:

  1. Show Design in Context - Thoroughly research the project alongside the real-world context. Depending on the complexity of the project, gather the data required and its existing condition. Supply much-needed information to justify the design proposal. You should perform the following:
    • define the size of the land,
    • investigate or observe the location of the terrain,
    • identify existing site conditions that may affect the construction of the building like the presence of natural resources like rivers and trees and human-made elements such as roads, buildings, and sometimes even the people.
  2. Provide eco-friendly design solution - a perfect balance is necessary between the natural and man-made environment. Use the resources wisely provided by the natural environment and learn to conserve them in your design approach to building the human environment. Factors that may affect the built environment are the Sun orientation which will affect the positioning of the building and its spaces within, maximizing the potential use of natural light and air ventilation.
  3. Create Compelling Visuals - Visualization speaks more and conveys the design concept more clearly. More often, winning projects are influenced by a clear and artistic visual presentation.
  4. Clearly communicate your vision - Visual presentation may influence the decision of the client but it would be more sufficient to say that Communication or the narrative can explain the design intent of the architect. This is to explain the reason why the Architectural design solution is done in a manner that the architect interprets. The architect's technical training suggests all the necessary design principles to come up with design solutions based on that principle together with his design philosophy.
  5. Iterate Creatively - Craft a compelling narrative about the design approach aimed at providing a solution to a problem and emphasizing the benefits it will give to the end-users.

Fly Through Animation of the Proposed Self-Sustainable Community Development | The Schematic Design Presentation

The is the flythrough animation of the Proposed Self-Sustainable Community Development Project. The aim of this presentation is to give an initial impression of the proposal and evaluate further if the design intent is implemented.

The Schematic Design Presentation

In this stage, the architect, based on his expertise and experience, gives his best interpretation of the design intent of the project, were, prior to accomplishing this, undergone so much time to come up with the overall impression through the use of 3d modeling of all the structures needed to achieve a self-sustainable community.
The flythrough animation ties everything together. There is more documentation submitted which will support the conceptual designs. The master plan, the individual plans of each of the buildings with 3d models and rendering of different views as shown in these examples below including those that were designed as we further develop the design:

The Early 3d presentation

The practice of architecture is in this particular project involves so much revising and refining of the design as we progress. You can see how the designs evolved and improved through time.

The design intent is to provide a commercial and residential structure that will be open to lot buyers who can incorporate their businesses within. The allotted lot, which is basically adjacent to the main road, is a good business strategy to reach a captured market within the vicinity.
Upon survey of the site, the proposal intends to incorporate facilities that are not available and provide activities that will welcome neighborhood and provide trades and income opportunities.

The Master Plan

Overall, there will be a combination of Commercial, Residential, Recreational facilities in this development.

The Development will come in 3 phases. The first phase will be the Self-sustainable Community Development project shown on the fly through animation. The next part will be a bigger area as shown. You can read related articles here: Subdivision Planning

Pen and Ink Illustration

Pen & Ink | Advance Visual Technology course

The Pen & ink rendering is the next step in the learning skills to visual technology. This is enhance your Design Presentation technique taught in architectural course.

After learning the skills in Pencil Rendering, you will also learn the skills in using Pen and Ink to help you develop the hand sketching technique. Changing your medium from pencil to Pen and ink will develop your skills by becoming more careful about the way you put the strokes into your drawing paper because you are dealing with a permanent drawing. Pencil can easily  be erased as compared to the pen and ink. The pen and ink is much cleaner and each of the line thickness can be emphasized.

At this stage, you will enjoy using different strokes and line techniques to create your own style of presentation.

The initial stage of your Design practice, hand sketching is still the best tool used in the presentation of your design concepts and ideas. This will even leave a high impression about your artistry, where you are giving the signal to your client that you are up to providing the highest work of art.

Exploring new Ideas for House Design | The Design Process

Introduction

This one is another response to a design request of a longtime friend. She would like to see her initials in her own Dream home. As I continue to explore my thoughts in composing a new design with the initials DFA, i thought of making a sketch that will speak of the same approach done in the previous post.

As a design exercise, house design are limitless. you can explore new ideas for house design with the initial requirement of exterior design that would bear the initials.

As a Design request, I came up with this design. More options come into play but this one may be appropriate in my initial design study.

The design concept will now be tested if this will be acceptable or not.

Let me walk you through the design process of an architect in terms of creating new design for a prospective client.

The Design Process

The Design process started from a presentation of a previous design that somehow got the attention of an old friend. made a request to do similar approach to her dream house.

Then the conceptual design of the exterior. Though this process may not seem to be the normal, while developing design composition, the size and shape of the house is already being considered so as to look like a functional house design. As part of the test, this design will be presented to see if it meets the expectation of the client.

The next stage is to present this to the client and see the feedback or the impression so that the space plan will follow afterwards.

What will be the arrangement of the spaces?

The form of the building layout will dictate the spaces within. I will share the approach to planning the spaces within the house of this design and the previous one. The intention is to show you the different approaches to creating a space for the built in size and shape of the house.

Space planning is one of the aspect of studies and architect should master. To create the spaces required and group them according to the level of privacy from public to semipublic to private spaces. In house design, public spaces are the entrances, living and dining areas. while semiprivate can be a guest hall while private spaces are the bedrooms and the toilets.

The outline of the plan is the outcome of the space planning analysis. The spaces are organized in such a way that they interact with one another based on the needs of the client. This image shows the different areas within, as we are dealing with the exterior design, architects build the design composition based on the outline of the building. This will cover the spaces within which will be an opportunity for interior designers to do their own design proposals.

The building envelope is the outcome of the design composition. There are different ways to approach the exterior design, The Spaces defines the form, following the standard sizes of every element within and without. The major elements in exterior design are the placement of windows and doors. According to building laws, there are also certain requirements to follow for the minimum areas required for window openings. This is to achieve light and air ventilation.

The structural components form the structure as well. This are all tied up together to make a rigid and strong structure, withstanding natural calamities and disasters such as flooding, earthquakes and storms.
The ground floor and the upper floors follow the same grid of the structural components. The massing study in the creation of the 3d model is a good starting point to evaluate the design composition of the house.

The overall design composition of the plan is now complete.

Watch out for the next post to explain the Space planning approach.

The design composition

The form shall be so mix together so as to create a design that will look like a house, sizes and shapes are proportionately considered while choices of building material shall be well placed to balance the texture and the identity of shapes forming the whole design and make the design requirement stand out - that is to show the initials of the client.

Somehow, these approaches made me finish the initial design concept of this house.

Comment below is you have some thoughts about it and I would be very glad to explore new ideas for house design till my next design challenges will come. I will keep sharing my thought about it to help you get more information about my house design experiences.

Thanks for taking some time reading my blog.

Hospital Design Presentation | Animation Using Sketchup

The Design Presentation is one of the major activity in the practice of Architecture. This is the presentation of the Design Proposals.

Animation Using Sketchup

Sketchup is very handy and useful in this situation. Aside from the different styles of sketch presentation, we can also make use of the animation available inside sketchup.

In the preparation of the Schematic Layout of the Hospital Design, it is important to save SCENES showing different views to further show and explain the design intention of the architect. Organizing the scenes from the very beginning of the 3d modelling, the scene may serve as a story board. This will show the organization of the Design from Plan Layout to the different perspective views.

The Schematic Design

Schemes are the initial Design done by the Architect. From his research and data gathered, the architect formulate his design. This will include diagrams that will help him analyze all the different aspects that should be considered in the design process.

  A project feasibility study

Depending on the complexity of the project, the feasibility study should be done and these are the things that should be included in the report
  •  The base plan and all the existing condition of the Site
  • The Sun Orientation
  • The existing Laws governing the building regulations, minimum set backs and  zoning regulations
  • The vehicular traffic flow from point of entry to the site

What Should be shown in the Presentation?

Assuming that all of these reports are made, the architect should prepare the following drawing documents;

  • The Plan Layout
  • The Site Plan
  • Perspectives
Sketchup, as mentioned earlier, is very useful in preparing all of the above drawing requirements. While creating the 3d model, the organization of the these documents should be organized inside sketchup in such a way that the manner of presentation will explain the design intention as it progresses to the final outcome of the whole design.
